I could spend a lot of time talking about how Live allows you to more easily warp samples or manipulate your song mid-flow. I may decide to repeat a chorus or skip a part, but I’m not jumping around randomly on the fly. When I play songs with loops, I already know the basic roadmap I am going to use. If you do decide to jump right to the chorus, instead, you could simply press the ‘Next Marker’ button in Mainstage to skip the Prechorus. What it really comes down to is how you need to play your songs. The order is already set when you import the song so it will just go there. So, in the example above, if you are coming to a prechorus, you don’t have to press anything. Mainstage, in contrast, will play through the song in full, all the while allowing you to change where you want to go next. If, during live performances, your song structures change frequently, you can easily adjust this on the fly with Live. You can see how much flexibility this provides in terms of structuring your song creatively on the fly.

This is the same for the intro, verse, chorus, etc.

So, before every prechorus in one song, you have to tell Live to play the prechorus. You have to manually “launch” that part of the song (“scene”) while you are playing. Typical band use, from my experience, of Live is to configure different parts of your song to play one at a time. To speak only to Live’s performance mode (“session view”), Mainstage and Live offer different options. How does it compare to Mainstage in regards to running loops live?Īs a precursor, let me say that Live is like a combination of Apple Logic (recording/mixing) and Mainstage (performance).

Ableton live is another music performance software (DAW) that many bands use to run loops and tracks.
